We were supposed to be in Innsbruck by sunset. Instead, a closed pass and a faulty GPS led us to a gravel track in the Vorarlberg. Sometimes the map lies to tell you a better story.

The map suggested a three-hour transit — a clean, clinical ascent through the heart of the Alps before reaching Bormio for a late lunch. There was no mention of the mist, the sudden temperature drop, or the sheer psychological weight of the forty-eight hairpins.
